VOA celebrates state grant for new housing units
by WHAM
Rochester, N.Y. – State funding is helping to pave the way for new housing for the homeless in our area.
Volunteers of America says the state is contributing a $1.25 million grant to help the project move forward. The Home Depot Foundation is also contributing $60,000.
The organization is looking to add new supportive housing units at Cooper Union on State Street. The VOA says homeless veterans will be given priority status for filling the units.
“Our focus since the VOA’s formation was really on helping to eliminate poverty,” said Lynn Sullivan of the Volunteers of America, “and unfortunately there’s far too much poverty, not only throughout the United States, but particularly in the Rochester community. Housing is a first step to helping people become self-sufficient.”
Volunteers of America is marking its 124th anniversary this week. Over the years, VOA says it has helped thousands in our area achieve permanent housing.
